Effect of magnesium supplementation on depression status in depressed patients with magnesium deficiency – Rajizadeh et al. 2017

Daily consumption of 500 mg magnesium oxide tablets for ≥8 wk by depressed patients suffering from magnesium deficiency leads to improvements in depression status and magnesium levels.

Population studied: 60 patients with diagnosed depression and hypomagnesemia.

Dosage & Duration: 2 groups, one receiving two 250-mg tablets of magnesium oxide daily and the other receiving placebo for 8 weeks.

Method: The Beck Depression Inventory-II was conducted and the concentration of serum magnesium was measured.

Results: The mean Beck score declined significantly more in the treatment group compared to the placebo group, with a 15.65 reduction compared to 10.40. Magnesium levels were normal in 88.5% of the treatment group by the end of the intervention, compare with 48.1% normalised in the placebo group. In conclusion, daily consumption of 500mg magnesium oxide tablets for ≥8 wk by depressed patients suffering from magnesium deficiency leads to improvements in depression status and magnesium levels.
